£40 Billion Floating Airport for London.
Engineering consultancy Beckett Rankine have revealed a proposal for a £40 billion floating airport on the Thames estuary designed take some of the stress away from London’s existing airports. As one of the busiest cities in the world, year on year it becomes increasingly obvious that London will not be able to deal with flight demand in the near future. Several other plans have been proposed, including Norman Foster’s London Britannia Airport, but each would use up precious land space. The floating airport would be just 40 minutes underground travel from central London and would be able to operate 24-hours a day as there are no nearby homes who would be affected by the noise.

Early on, I think before the script was even finished, Rian had The Made Shop do some preliminary concept work for helping to visualize some of the future weapons and vehicles in Looper. Ultimately, the direction I was moving in wasn’t right for the world Rian had in mind. I had a much more stereotypical “cool” sci-fi future in mind, but one of the best things about the actual near-future world Rian and his production designer created for Looper is how realistic, worn-down, make-shift, and un-techy it feels while still being subtly mind-blowing and disorienting. It’s actually quite remarkable.
Above are a few of the early concepts we proposed, and even though they were the wrong tone for Looper, I’m still pretty happy with them. So when you go see Looper (tonight) you won’t see any of these — which is absolutely as it should be, I think you’ll agree. But I still wouldn’t mind riding that Slat Bike around in 30 years :)

A vapor cloud has formed over the wings of the plane due to the acceleration of air over the top of the plane. The acceleration has dropped the local pressure enough that the moisture of the air condenses. Some of this condensation has been caught by the wingtip vortices, highlighting those as well. Finally, the twin exhausts have a wake full of shock diamonds, formed by a series of shock waves and expansion fans that adjust the exhaust’s pressure to match that of the ambient atmosphere.
